The EARL of COURTOWN LODGE
No 7653
Consecrated 29th September 1959
The roots of Earl of Courtown Lodge No. 7653 stretch back to 1956, when a group of London Freemasons living in Luton and Dunstable sought to form their own Lodge of Instruction. This culminated in a meeting on 5th February 1957 at the Leicester Arms Hotel, Dunstable Road, Luton. With sponsorship from The Chiswick Lodge No. 2012, the London Brethren’s Lodge of Instruction No. 1 was established.
The quality of ritual soon became a hallmark, largely due to the rigorous standards of W.Bro H. Darby, the first Preceptor. In January 1959, the Brethren formally decided to petition for a new Lodge named in memory of the late Earl of Courtown, Provincial Grand Master of Bedfordshire, who had tragically passed in 1957. Permission for the name and crest was duly granted.
The Consecration of the Lodge took place on 29th September 1959 at the College of Technology, Church Street, Luton. R.W. Bro Gilbert Inglefield officiated in his first Consecration as Provincial Grand Master. The event was attended by nearly 200 guests, including the Earl’s son, R.W. Bro The Right Hon Earl of Courtown.
The Oration by Rev. V. J. French reflected on the Antient Charges, discipline, and Masonic obligation, underlining the Lodge’s moral and spiritual foundation.
Initially meeting at the Leicester Arms, Lodge membership and engagement grew quickly. The Lodge sponsored The Farley Lodge No. 7796 in 1961 and celebrated the dedication of its own Banner in March 1962. The standard of ritual remained central, with contributions from several committed Brethren.
The decade closed with a growing reputation, a flourishing Lodge of Instruction, and a move to new premises in Dunstable due to changes in venue management.
During this period, the Lodge faced several venue changes but maintained strong continuity in leadership and participation. The move to a permanent home at the new Dunstable Masonic Hall in 1979 was a defining moment.
In 1981, the Lodge appointed its first Charity Steward. By 1984, W.Bro W. Gooday was reinstalled as Worshipful Master to mark the 25th Anniversary. Throughout these years, several father-son Initiations and charitable endeavours enriched Lodge life.
The 1990s and early 2000s saw continued commitment to Masonic ideals. Several members were honoured with Provincial and Grand Rank. W.Bro L. R. O. Smith retired in 1999 after 31 years as Secretary, receiving a Waterford crystal bowl in recognition of his service.
The Lodge raised substantial funds for the 2004 Festival, earned commendations from Provincial Grand Lodge, and continued to welcome new members. Special commemorations included the 40th and 50th anniversaries, new presentations of the working tools, and the introduction of long-service certificates.
A special poem from W.Bro P. Smith marked his Charity Stewardship, and heartfelt tributes honoured departed Brethren, particularly the Lodge’s first Initiate, W.Bro S. Lyne.
As of today, Earl of Courtown Lodge remains vibrant and committed to Freemasonry’s core values. The Lodge has been blessed by the dedication of its Founders and successive generations of members who upheld ritual, fraternity, and charity.
It continues to meet with regularity and ceremony, welcoming guests, initiating new members, and strengthening its legacy of service, discipline, and Masonic brotherhood.
